A recent Washington Post article highlights a new study revealing that if all unpaid family caregivers who are caring for an older adult were paid for their work the total cost would well exceed $500 billion annually.  Additionally, many of these caregivers are paying out of their own pocket for various needs of their loved ones. Unpaid family members are the primary source of caregiving for older adults in the United States. While this number is already staggering, it likely pales in comparison to what it will be in ten  years when you consider that the number of households age 65-plus is projected to grow by more than 40% over that time frame and a majority of those households will have at least one person requiring some level of care.
